Day 1

Well I made it to Dubai, safe and sound. It is unlike anywhere else I've been. Everything is lit up like Christmas. Our hotel is unbelievable! The pictures do not even come close to doing it justice. When I arrived I was greated by a hotel representative even before I went through customs. He walked me through customs, grabbed my luggage, and escorted me to the BMW waiting to take me to the hotel. The driver was dressed in a starched white suit and hat. He greeted me with a bouquet of flowers and showed me the sights on the way to the hotel. An interesting fact he told me was that only 20% of all people living in Dubai are natives.

When we arrived at the hotel, an entourage of people welcomed me as I got out of the car. It was Ms. Floyd this and Ms. Floyd that, and none of them were asking if they could go to the bathroom! I felt really out of place, because I dressed very casual for the plane ride, you know, straight out of Old Navy. But no one acted as if they minded. I can tell, I didn't pack enough nice clothes!

I am sure I am not the only person who watches people in the airport. It would make for a great case study. I love watching people! Anyway, the winner for the day was the guy dressed like Ali G (an alter-ego of Sasha Baron Cohen) listening to his MP3 player, which incidently was blaring "Country Road" by John Denver. Twilight Zone?!

Besides watching people, the other flying ritual I have is ordering gingerale. Don't know why, but it just seems like what I should be drinking when I fly. I can honestly say that I don't ever drink it any other time.

Well I should go to bed, even though my body thinks it is 10 am. Thanks so much for all the prayers on our behalf! They really made a difference!

More to come!

I always order gingerale when I fly, TOO!!! And that is about the only time I drink it, as well. YAY! I am so glad you made it! I have been holding my breath . . . do you know how hard it is to teach when you're asphyxiated and practically unconscious?!? It wasn't pretty I can tell you, but my aides found it quite entertaining.

WOW... being escorted to your private ride, flowers, being addressed as Ms. Floyd... It is as it should be!

YOU ARE IN DUBAI! Are you going to get to see those palm tree islands and that huge hotel that looks like a sailboat (you're not staying there, are you?)? I've seen t.v. programs about how each were constructed... AMAZING!!!

Soak it all in, chick!

(Oh, and Lisa's blogging now?! Peer pressure really does work!)

Lisa, I knew we had a deeper connection, and the gingerale commonality just proved it. I cannot even tell you how much I wish you were here with me. I guess I know what it was like for you in Scotland.

Angie, well to answer your question, yes we are staying in the sailboat hotel. Go to www.burj-al-arab.com to check it out. Seriously, the pictures do not even do it justice. I can look out the living room of our suite and see one of the 3 Palm Islands. To what I think is the west of the hotel are the World Islands.

I love you guys!!!
Sarah

GET OUT! I cannot believe you're staying there! It's like... an architectural wonder! Here's another link for your readers... small pic, but it's a better angle:

I'm totally flabbergasted! Sure beats a $20 hostel! :-)

I don't see what the big deal is. I mean who would ever want to pretend they are staying in a sailboat anyway? I much rather prefer motel six anyday--no big to do they simply leave the light on for me--like my mom did when I lived at home...

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! I am so jealous! And is that a MIRROR over the bed in the website?! I am so glad you made it--I've passed your apartment everday when picking the boys up from school and wondered exactly where you were at. I'm not even on the trip and I am going through a bazillion emotions!

Woo Hoo Now there are only 86 days left. However at this rate you may choose to extend your trip. I'm warning you though the prayers are only valid for 87 days. Enjoy every minute of every day.

Hey Sarah, Angie gave me your blog address. So I too could be jealous. Hope you have a great trip!

I am so excited for you. Will you be able to tell us the name of the hotel where you are staying? I would love to be able to look at it on line. This is one of those once in a lifetime experiences. Enjoy!

This is my first time as a blogger. You are teaching me new skills:)

Connie,

There is a link in one of the previous comments I made to my friend Angie. Check it out. I think it is about the 3rd comment down. Glad to hear from you!

TCS, how cool that I am reading your comment from my blog. I get used to seeing you on Angie's.

Elaine, I am completely content with Motel 6 as well, but I have to say, this place Rocks the Casbah so to speak!
